The Night Witches

My thesis design at the University of Memphis is a story of women thrown into impossible circumstances and the world and families they built in spite of everything around them. The women of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, "The Night Witches," were part of the Soviet Air Force during World War II. They flew over 24,000 missions over the course of more than 1,100 consecutive nights. They were war heroes, and they were also people. This design focused on creating a tangible difference between the world of the Witches and the world of the war they found themselves in. Through the use of live foley, spatial audio, and some very well-conditioned actors, the aural world of the Witches was that of a family trying their best to make sure as many made it out alive as possible, and always with the support of their sisters.
